Soroptimist International (SI) is the largest service association of self-employed women worldwide. Founded in Oakland (California) in 1921, we are now represented by more than 3,000 clubs with approximately 90,000 members in more than 124 countries. As “sorores ad optimum” – women / sisters striving for the best – we stand up in particular for the observation of ethical values, human rights and the advancement of women, friendship and global communication. SI has special adviser status and representatives for gender issues at the UN as well as at the European Council in Strasbourg.
As our club name we chose the Latin name of Meran/Merano, Merania. The members of our club live and work here, in a town full of contrasts and distinctive features, a cultural and spa town in the heart of the Alps, with a mediterranean climate in spite of being flanked by snow-capped 3,000m high mountain peaks. In a South Tyrolean town in Italy where the German and the Italian language coexist alongside each other like the South Tyrolean culture and the Italian way of life. A town where you can certainly enjoy life!
